Iran has announced it would never agree to US warplanes using its airspace to attack neighbouring Afghanistan."We will never allow American airplanes to use Iranian airspace to attack Afghanistan," Foreign Ministry spokesman Hamid Reza Asefi told Reuters news agency.

Iranian President Mohammad Khatami reacted quickly to condemn last week's suicide airliner attacks. Washington said few countries would be "redlined" out of an alliance, prompting some to hope the two arch-enemies would move to repair long-cut ties.

Iran has repeatedly called for the United States to be cautious in responding to last week's deadly attacks in New York and Washington, fearing what it calls a "humanitarian catastrophe" with hundreds of thousands of Afghan refugees heading for its borders.
