More than 40 targets - terrorist training camps in Iran and Afghanistan and chemical-biological plants in Iraq - have been identified for total destruction, together with Osama bin Laden's mountain hideout. U.S. Special Operations Forces - its Navy Seals and its Delta Force commandoes - are on an hour's notice to leave their Joint Special Operations Command at Fort Bragg.

For the past twenty-four hours senior special operations officers from Israel have joined them. Fort Bragg, once the lynchpin of the ground assault in the Gulf War, will play a similar role in what could turn out to be the greatest retaliatory strike since the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

It is also possible that Russia's famed Spesnick - the one crack unit that President Putin has insisted must remain at battle readiness - could also form part of the assault force. The Russian force has more experience in fighting in Afghanistan than any other.
