Moderate Iranian President Mohammad Khatami branded United States President George W Bush "arrogant" for allegedly thinking that he can "distinguish between good and bad on his own", the state news agency IRNA said.

President Khatami, referring to President Bush's recent comments on the September 11 attacks in the United States, said, "A powerful human being can become so arrogant, that he thinks he can distinguish between good or bad on his own".

Addressing Tehran university students on the occasion of the new school year, President Khatami singled out a warning by President Bush that "you are either with us, or with the terrorists".

"This division, which dates back to views taken in the last century, is the worst kind of division, and I hope that it was a mistake on his part," President Khatami said.
